 Legacy of slavery

The slave trade was one part of a whole system of exploitation of African countries and people by European countries.

For instance, the Democratic Republic of Congo, where CMS now works, was brutally exploited by western countries: some historians think that 10 million people – half the population – died between 1885 and 1908.

This was because greedy western rulers did not care about the people that they were governing, or developing the country, but only about making money for themselves.

Instability has continued until now, and the recent war has left millions dead, and hundreds of children forced to serve as child soldiers, porters and slaves.

Congo is not alone. Across Africa, the legacy of exploitation breeds conflict zones where children suffer. One person working to make things better is CMS’s Isobel Booth-Clibborn, who helps organisations who are working with children get better at looking after children who are in danger of being hurt by adults.

She says: “In situations like this, it is always the poor and the children who suffer most.”

You can help CMS to break the legacy of slavery by fundraising to free children and young people from modern-day slavery.
