Life-Giving Costumes

"The costumes you are wearing have an amazing story to tell..."

The World To Rights project was able to support two wonderful enterprises in Bangladesh in a really creative way. In need of several hundred costumes to give the workshops and performance a realistic lift at the end of each day, we turned to Nobakoli Girls Craft School and the Church of Bangladesh Social Development Programme (CBSDP) for help.

Nobakoli is a project of the Church of Bangladesh, based in Rajshahi started in 1995. It gives training both residential (1 year) and non-residential (6 months) to very poor girls, adolescents, school drop outs, ethnic minority, divorced, former sex-workers and disabled women & girls.

Past and present students of Nobakoli made the shawls providing girls with opportunity to work for a fair wage and improve their skills. Workers with CBSDP have made the boys waistcoats and caps.

"The costumes reinforce the message of the World To Rights day," said Mike North, part of the WTR team, "understanding your own rights, and enabling others to exercise theirs."

Hundreds of children around the country will be wearing these costumes during the WTR day, and will be told where they have come from after their final bow.
