Living on the streets

There are an estimated 75,000 children living on the streets in Manila - the capital city of the Philippines.

In September and October 2008, the CMS youth team visited Kate and Tim Lee - mission partners committed to working with street children through Jigsaw.

As a Christian development organisation, Jigsaw seeks to bring opportunities for change and development in urban poor communities and for individuals and families living on the streets.

All of Jigsaw’s local staff come from the areas in which Jigsaw is working. Therefore they are the best equipped to understand, empathise and know the problems in their communities. One of Jigsaw’s aims is to train local staff to be kids' workers, managers, administrators or welfare/social workers.

Kate and Tim Lee (from the UK) see their role primarily as facilitators and trainers. Tim’s role is huge at present but gradually his responsibilities are being given to the Filippino management team. Jigsaw is a registered NGO in the Philippines and their hope is that in the future it will be sustained and run entirely by local staff.
